TAXES
It is only a myth that Native Americans don’t pay
taxes. Most Mille Lacs Band Members pay exactly the same taxes as everyone else, including federal and state income taxes, social security taxes, unemployment insurance, real estate and sales taxes, liquor and cigarette taxes, and gas and motor vehicle taxes. The only exception is a small percentage of
Band Members who live and work on the reservation (they are exempt from state income tax only).

Not only do Band Members and Band-owned businesses pay taxes – the Band Government funds programs, services, and public works projects. We have already built two schools, two health clinics, three assisted living units for elders, four community centers, an elderly center, a water treatment plant and water tower, and a wastewater treatment plant, and over
200 new homes. We fund critical programs such as a Workforce Education and Development Center, an Early Education Program, a full-time Tribal Police Department, and a tribal health insurance corporation.
